The president of the Peruvian Congress, José Williams, has informed that the session scheduled for Tuesday on the possible advancement of the elections to 2023 has been postponed again due to the lack of consensus among the different Peruvian benches in the Chamber.
«In order to find consensus among the national representation and at the request of the president of the Constitution Committee, the plenary session convened to approve the advance of elections is rescheduled for tomorrow Wednesday at 11.00 a.m.,» he said on his official Twitter profile.
Since Monday, the president of the Constitution Commission, Hernando Guerra García, has been leading a round of contacts with the different parliamentary benches with the aim of reaching an agreement, as reported by the newspaper ‘El Comercio’.
The plenary of the Peruvian Congress approved on Monday by 66 votes in favor, 49 against and 6 abstentions to re-debate and subsequently vote on the possibility of bringing forward the elections, one of the main demands of the protests that have been shaking the country for 53 days and that have claimed some 60 deaths.
The Latin American country is immersed in a deep political crisis after the dismissal of former President Pedro Castillo, who announced last December 7 the dissolution of the Andean Parliament and the establishment of an emergency government.
Following the arrest of the former president, tens of thousands of people came out to protest in various parts of the country to demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the dissolution of Congress and the urgent calling of presidential elections. More than 60 people have lost their lives in the riots between demonstrators and security forces.
