The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has announced that he is sending firefighting equipment and experts to Chile to help extinguish the dozens of fires that have already burned some 270,000 hectares in Chilean territory.
«The climate crisis is burning Chile», Petro lamented on Twitter, in a message to which his Chilean counterpart, Gabriel Boric, responded, thanking him for the help and for the fact that «Latin American unity makes small any distance» in the region.
The Chilean authorities have confirmed the death of more than twenty people due to this wave of fires and have warned that the situation will continue to be complex in the coming days. According to official figures, some 800 homes have been destroyed in recent days.
