The National Penitentiary Institute of Peru (INPE) has announced on Tuesday the opening of an administrative disciplinary process against former president Pedro Castillo after he gave an interview to a Spanish media from prison.
The institution has indicated in a statement that it has not authorized any interview inside the penitentiary center where Castillo is imprisoned and that the former president only has the right to communicate with his family and friends and to receive visits, as reported by ‘La Republica’.
He has also pointed out that the penal execution code states that, although communications are a right of every person deprived of liberty, these must be given within the parameters and objectives pursued by the penitentiary treatment, which excludes those of a political or proselytizing nature.
INPE’s denunciation comes after the former president gave an exclusive interview to the Spanish newspaper ‘El Salto’, where he defended his announcement of the dissolution of the Peruvian Congress and assured that he is the victim of a plot organized by the Peruvian right wing.
This is the second administrative process opened by the INPE against the former president, since last January 26 it determined that he had carried out a disciplinary offense for publishing a signed letter on the social network Twitter. After that, the Technical Penitentiary Council initiated an investigation to determine any responsibility according to the law, according to the newspaper.
Pedro Castillo has been held in Barbadillo prison, on the outskirts of Lima, since December 17, after the Judiciary ordered 18 months of preventive detention against him following the announcement on December 7 of the dissolution of Congress and the establishment of an emergency government.
The Peruvian Justice decreed such measure against the former Peruvian president while he is being investigated for allegedly committing crimes of rebellion, conspiracy, abuse of authority and disturbance of the public tranquility.
