Brazil’s Federal Police (PF) arrested on Friday in Rio de Janeiro Miguel Ángel Insfrán, alias ‘Tío Rico’, suspected of ordering the death of Paraguayan prosecutor Marcelo Pecci, who was shot dead in May 2022 while on his honeymoon with his wife in Colombia.
Insfrán, a suspected drug trafficker of Paraguayan nationality, had an international arrest warrant out for the murder of Pecci, a prosecutor who fights organized crime, and for whose death six other people have already been arrested.
Authorities claim that ‘Tio Rico’s’ presence in Brazil is due to his intentions to become the largest supplier of cocaine in Rio de Janeiro and from there extend his networks throughout the country.
Six other people were arrested. The last of these, Venezuelan national Gabriel Carlos Salinas Mendoza, arrested in Caracas, is accused of driving the jet ski from which the shots were fired. Four more people were arrested and sentenced to 23 years in prison for their participation.
