Tanzanian health authorities have ordered strengthened surveillance measures in health centers and communities along the border with Malawi in an attempt to contain the spread of a serious cholera outbreak in its neighboring country.
The permanent secretary of the Tanzanian Ministry of Health, Abel Makubi, explained that these measures include actively searching for and monitoring suspected cholera cases along the border with Malawi, in statements to the official Chinese news agency Xinhua.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared on Thursday that the outbreak, which has left at least 1,300 dead and 40,000 cases so far according to authorities, is the most serious in the African country’s history.
Malawi’s neighboring countries, such as Zambia, have also reported cholera cases, as have Burundi, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and Somalia.
