Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday that its surveillance systems have never detected Chinese spy balloons and that the devices that have been sighted were only for scientific purposes, specifically weather observation.
A military official of the Ministry, Wen Chi Huang, explained to the media that «this type of free-floating balloons (without propulsion system) in the troposphere, detected in the vicinity of Taiwan, can not perform intelligence tasks».
Taipei thus comes to the step of the information published by the ‘Financial Times’ and that, from anonymous sources of the Taiwanese Government, recognized the sighting of dozens of Chinese military aircraft. Huang clarified that none of the detected objects posed a threat.
He also defended the Taiwanese authorities’ commitment to the observation of such objects. «We have closely monitored all flying objects in nearby areas or in our airspace,» he added.
