
The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has awarded his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodimir Zelenski, with the Order of Freedom, a recognition awarded to those who defend values in favor of civilization, dignity and freedom.
Zelenski has been decorated with the Grand Collar of this order, the highest degree and reserved for foreign heads of state, both in office and retired. Among those who have already received this distinction are King Juan Carlos, recognized by Portugal in 1988.
The Portuguese Presidency has made the award to Zelenski coincide with the first anniversary of the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In addition, it comes ahead of a parliamentary initiative which was going to demand precisely that the Order of Freedom be awarded to the Ukrainian leader.
