Eintracht Frankfurt fans will not be allowed to enter the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Napoli on 15 March, the German club said on Tuesday.
According to the German club, the Italian Interior Ministry will issue a court order against the Serie A leaders, who will not be allowed to sell tickets to Eintracht Frankfurt fans. The ban will also affect the official quota of 2,700 tickets in total, 2,400 of which are in the guest section, to which the club would be entitled according to UEFA regulations.
«It is an unprecedented and unique event in European football and a sad day. Influencing the competition by arguing the security situation is a distortion of the competition in our eyes,» said Frankfurt board member Philipp Reschke, who complained that the club has «no trump card» to use.
In the first leg on 21 February, which the Germans lost 2-0, Italian fans were physically attacked in Frankfurt and nine people were arrested.
Hours earlier it also emerged that Freiburg will have to make do with fewer fans than expected for the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie away to Juventus.
The Italian authorities and the club announced that tickets purchased by Freiburg fans through season tickets with their club will be cancelled for Thursday’s match.
