British architect David Alan Chipperfield was named the winner of the 2023 Pritzker Architecture Prize on Tuesday for being a «prolific professional who is radical in his restraint».

«I am so overwhelmed to receive this extraordinary honour and to be associated with the previous winners who have given so much inspiration to the profession,» said Chipperfield, the jury announced on social media.

Chipperfield is the 52nd recipient of the award and has been described by the jury as «subtle yet powerful, restrained yet elegant», while praising that he demonstrates «his reverence for history and culture while honouring pre-existing natural and built environments».

«He reinvents the functionality and accessibility of new buildings, renovations and restorations through timeless modern design that confronts climatic urgencies, transforms social relationships and reinvigorates cities,» the jury said.

The architect said that he receives this award as an encouragement to continue to direct his attention «not only to the essence of architecture and its meaning, but also to the contribution we can make as architects to address the existential challenges of climate change and social inequality».

Chipperfield graduated from Kingston School of Art (UK) in 1976 and from the London Architectural Association’s School of Architecture in 1980, where he learned to become a critic, re-envisioning the potential of each element to expand each project beyond the task itself.

His built works, spanning over four decades, are broad in typology and geography, including over one hundred works ranging from civic, cultural and academic buildings to residences and urban masterplans in Asia, Europe and North America.
