Former British Prime Ministers Boris Johnson and Liz Truss have confirmed that they will vote against the Windsor Framework, the text negotiated between the Rishi Sunak Government and the European Union to try to resolve misgivings arising from the Northern Ireland Protocol following Brexit.
This agreement would mean that Northern Ireland would remain captured by the legal order of the European Union or that the United Kingdom as a whole has been unable to take any advantage of Brexit,» explained Johnson in a statement published just hours before a key parliamentary vote.
The former British prime minister described this agreement as »unacceptable» and warned that it is the British who have to »take back control» of the negotiation.
Liz Truss, who was the country’s prime minister between September and October 2022, has also made it clear that she will not support her successor’s plan in Downing Street, as she believes the Windsor Framework »terribly affects» the UK’s ability to decouple from European rules, according to the BBC.
Along with them, former ministers such as Priti Patel or the former leader of the Conservative Party Iain Duncan Smith will also vote against, although the Government will push the text through no matter what, because it has the votes of the opposition. However, survival at the expense of the support of its theoretical rivals would entail for Sunak a new political attrition.
