Algeria’s state-owned oil company, Sonatrach, has announced the discovery of six new oil and gas fields during the first quarter of the year that could yield more than 1.5 million cubic meters of gas.
Sonatrach has detailed in a statement published on its website that »two oil and gas fields have been discovered in the Amguid Mesaud basin» and has specified that »during the drilling of the BRM-1 and BMD-1 wells, flow rates of 5,699 barrels of oil per day and 170,461 cubic meters of gas per day have been recorded in the first well and flow rates of 4,856 barrels of oil per day and 255,912 cubic meters of gas per day in the second well.».
»These results confirm the significant oil and gas potential in the Tugurt region, located east of Hasi Mesaud,» he stressed, before stating that two other wells in the Berkine basin have yielded »129,048 cubic meters of gas per day and 239 barrels of condensate per day, in one reservoir, and 1,905 barrels of oil per day and 137,484 cubic meters of gas per day, in a second reservoir.» The second well, called SAISW-1, produced with flow rates of 3,117 barrels of oil per day and 219,336 cubic meters of gas per day,» he added.
On the other hand, he said that another gas field has been discovered in Ohanet, in the Ilizi basin, where »gas flow rates of 336,930 cubic meters of gas per day and 1,504 barrels of condensate per day» have been obtained. At Ued Mia, in Hasi Rmel, 453 barrels of oil per day and 168,312 cubic meters of gas per day have been obtained.
»These discoveries illustrate the relevance of the efforts made by Sonatrach in exploration and renewal of hydrocarbon reserves and demonstrate the attractiveness of the mining sector in Algeria,» the company said.
The war in Ukraine has turned Algeria into the axis of European energy policy and has also led to agreements with the French company Engie, which joins the supply through Spain, although Algiers has already expressed its intention to change its strategy to the detriment of Spain, which Algeria reproaches for its change to support the Moroccan autonomy plan for Western Sahara, since the Saharawi independence fighters are allies of Algiers.
