The Italian Coast Guard has rescued 1,200 people crossing the Mediterranean on Monday night in at least four boats that have been shipwrecked, leaving two dead and about 20 missing.
Open Arms has rescued 47 people, including a pregnant woman in serious condition and a baby, from one of these boats, which had reportedly been adrift for two days. The people on board are already in Lampedusa.
As reported by the Rai channel, another of the boats was a small seven-meter boat carrying 38 people, which had already taken on water by the time Coast Guard officers arrived. A 26-year-old woman on board died.
Another Tunisian vessel, a fishing boat, also rescued 40 people before the arrival of the Italian authorities, who finally took care of the migrants. These are some of the shipwrecks reported by the Italians, but they have stated that more could have occurred in the last hours.
A few weeks ago, the Italian government decreed a state of emergency to deal with the increase in the migratory flow, a measure that will be in force for six months and will provide state structures with five million euros from the National Emergency Fund with the aim, among others, of facilitating the reception of migrants, as well as reinforcing repatriation and expulsion tools.
