At least ten people were killed in an attack early Sunday morning by unidentified gunmen on the northern Benin town of Kaobagou, amid deteriorating security in the area near the border with Burkina Faso.
Sources quoted by the Beninese news portal 24h au Benin have detailed that all the victims had their throats slit by the assailants, with no claim of responsibility so far. The attack has also left many people missing, although it is not known if they have been abducted by the attackers.
The Beninese Army has reinforced security in the area, located in the department of Atacora, and has launched an operation to try to capture those responsible for the assault. The African country has seen a spike in attacks in recent years and there are fears that jihadist groups operating in the Sahel are extending their operations to the Gulf of Guinea.
