U.S. Secretary of State Anotny Blinken held a telephone meeting on Tuesday with Egyptian Foreign Minister Samé Shukri, with whom he discussed the situation in Sudan.
According to a joint statement from the two politicians, Blinken offered his condolences for the death of a member of the Egyptian Embassy in Khartoum during evacuations of diplomatic personnel.
He has also warmly thanked Egypt for its reception of tens of thousands of Sudanese refugees who have fled to his country, which borders northern Sudan, since the start of the conflict, saying the U.S. stands ready to provide the necessary assistance to help.
Blinken has welcomed Egypt’s role in the peace talks between the two sides of the conflict, which together with other countries and international organizations have achieved a ceasefire in the African country.
The minister, according to the Egyptian statement, reiterated to his U.S. counterpart the importance of non-intervention by external actors in Sudan in order not to fuel the conflict.
On the other hand, Blinken referred to the meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, affirming that »those who coexist with the Assad regime should seriously consider how these efforts are aimed at meeting the needs of the Syrian people».
