A Baghdad court has sentenced an Iraqi police officer, Ahmed Hamdaoui Ueid al-Kenani, to death for the murder of prominent academic and security expert Hisham al-Hashimi three years ago.
Al Kenani has been convicted under anti-terrorism legislation, according to a court statement carried by the pan-Arab Al Arabiya television Al Hashimi was an expert on Sunni armed groups and Islamic State and had close ties to Iraq’s top leadership. He was shot dead in front of his home in July 2020 by four individuals on two motorcycles.
He was also one of the most critical voices against pro-Iranian armed groups such as the Popular Mobilization Forces, which are also linked to the main Iraqi Shiite political parties.
Al Kenani confessed after his arrest to being in command of the group that killed Al Hashimi in the middle of the street and security camera videos have been released to support this version.
