The European Union and the UN have condemned the Russian attack on civilian buildings in the central Ukrainian city of Vinitsia, in which at least 22 people have been killed and another 50 injured.
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, and Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, have issued a joint statement accusing Russia of launching attacks against «civilian objects, including hospitals, medical facilities, schools and shelters».
Thus, the EU has regretted that the city of Vinitsia joins the despicable list of Ukrainian localities that have been the scene of Russian atrocities, such as Bucha, Mariupol, Kramatorsk, Kremenchuk, Sloviansk, Kharkov, Odessa and, most recently, Chasiv Yar.
«The Russian Armed Forces and their proxies are leaving a trail of blood in Ukraine. Thousands of civilians have already been killed. This barbaric behavior by Russia, in total disregard for humanitarian law, must stop immediately,» both European officials have demanded.
Both Borrell and Lenarcic have seen «with their own eyes» the scenario that remains in Ukraine as the war progresses, and have «witnessed the horrible destruction» that Russia is causing in its neighboring country, which it decided to invade at the end of February on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The European Union has focused on the challenges faced by the population, such as «death, violence, including sexual violence, forced deportations and destruction», calling on the international community to ensure that these «crimes» do not go unpunished.
«All those responsible for these atrocities must be held accountable for their actions, in accordance with international law,» Borrell and Lenarcic concluded in their statement, in which they stressed that the EU-27 support «all efforts to ensure accountability for human rights violations and violations of humanitarian law».
For its part, the Office of the United Nations Secretary General has conveyed in a brief statement that António Guterres is «appalled» by the missile attack on the city of Vinitsia. «The Secretary-General condemns any attack against civilians or civilian infrastructure and reiterates his call for accountability for such violations,» it said.
