Authorities in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine approved Monday a ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages in order to «ensure public safety and order» in areas still under Ukrainian government control.

The Ukrainian government has implemented this measure under the umbrella of the martial law that governs the country in the framework of the war, initiated at the end of February by order of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin.

As reported by the Donetsk Regional State Administration, it is forbidden to «trade with alcoholic beverages and alcohol-based substances», with the exception of approved medicines.

«Patrols will also be organized on the territory of the region to monitor compliance with the ban on alcohol trade,» the regional authorities explained in a statement.
