The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, met this Tuesday in Buenos Aires with the President of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, with whom he shared the European Union’s interest in strengthening bilateral relations.

Specifically, Borrell has conveyed to Fernández the intention of Brussels to carry out a «new political and cooperation agreement» between the Union and Argentina, in order to renew the Memorandum signed between the two parties 32 years ago, as reported by the High Representative himself on his Twitter account.

«We have a mutual interest in strengthening the bilateral relationship. We launched negotiations for a new EU-Argentina bilateral political and cooperation framework agreement. 32 years after the original agreement it is time to modernize our relationship,» Borrell has said.

Likewise, the EU High Representative and the Argentine President highlighted the role that Argentina can play as a stable supplier of clean energy, food and strategic minerals, as well as the development of value chains associated with these sectors for the Union.

For this reason, Brussels wants to strengthen its relationship with the Latin American country in the energy field and wants to sign a memorandum of understanding on energy between Argentina and the EU to cooperate on renewables and green hydrogen and promote the development of liquefied natural gas for export to Europe.

They have also highlighted the «broad» cooperation agenda that exists in various areas of work, such as joint actions against climate change, gender issues, human rights, education, culture, digitization and biotechnology, as reported by the Presidency of Argentina in a statement.

The European Union is the second destination for Argentine exports and the third origin of its imports. It is also the first foreign direct investor in Argentina.
