The Russian government has promised Wednesday that those who fight alongside Russian troops in Ukraine as volunteers will receive the status of war veterans after the end of the armed conflict.

For this purpose, Russian authorities have explained, amendments to the law on veterans are necessary, as reported by the Interfax news agency. Also, volunteers who were wounded during the Russian invasion of Ukraine will be able to apply for the relevant allowances like any other servicemen.

«The proposed solution allows volunteers and their families, along with Armed Forces personnel, to qualify for benefits and social measures provided by law for this group of workers,» the government said in a statement.

Last March, the Russian Parliament adopted a new veterans’ law that mainly affected those who were already part of the Russian Army but who had gone on to participate in the invasion.

Shortly thereafter, the regulation was expanded to cover those civilians who had joined the Russian forces. In early August, the legislation was amended to ensure that Russian Security Service border guards participating in the war also receive veteran status.
