Climate activists have perpetrated this Thursday a protest action in a museum in The Hague against the painting ‘The Girl with the Pearl Earring’, to which a man has tried to stick his head with glue, although the famous work of Johannes Vermeer has not been damaged.
The Dutch police have arrested three activists for this action, which has also thrown a red liquid on the painting, protected by a glass. The Mauritshuis Museum has confirmed in a statement that the room where the painting is located has been closed as a precaution, according to the NOS channel.
The gallery has deplored the «defenselessness» of art and condemned any attempt to damage the works, regardless of their objectives. In recent weeks, there has been a succession of protests in museums around the world, with incidents in Germany, the UK and France.
‘The Girl with the Pearl’, dating from 1665, is one of the most recognizable works in the Mauritshuis, also because of its translation into a novel and a film.
