
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, has «firmly» condemned the sanctions adopted by Iran against European media and MEPs, including the Spanish Javier Zarzalejos, of the PP, and Hermann Tertsch, of VOX.
In a message on social networks, the ‘popular’ Maltese has described as «absurd» the reaction of Tehran in response to the restrictions of the EU-27 for the death of the young Mahsa Amini, who died after being arrested for violating the Islamic dress code.
«Women have the right to demonstrate. Women’s life and freedom is inviolable and on behalf of the European Parliament let me assure everyone that we will not stop fighting for these fundamental values,» she said, insisting that «no one will silence» MEPs.
Tehran assures that it is acting against individuals and entities that support violence and encourage unrest and urges the EU and member state governments not to meddle in matters that would be internal.
The list includes companies and also several media outlets, among them the Persian-language subsidiaries of the German Deutsche Welle and the French RFI, as well as the heads of the ‘Bild’ newspaper, according to official Iranian media, which also pointed to French and German politicians.
