Russia sees expulsion of diplomatic employee in Moldova as another step towards the end of relations

The Russian authorities on Wednesday have disavowed Moldova’s decision to expel an employee of the Russian Embassy in Chisinau, considering it a further step towards the dismantling of bilateral relations.

«The decision to expel the Russian diplomat was another confirmation of the course of the current Moldovan authorities to dismantle Russian-Moldovan cooperation, which has a multifaceted character and deep historical roots,» Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

According to the Russian representative, Moldova has been influenced by foreign agents to make this decision, which is part of an «active anti-Russian campaign» promoted both by the «pro-Western» authorities and the media.

Zakharova has accused the media of baselessly spreading the idea that Russia poses a military threat to Moldova, and that Russia could meddle in the country’s internal affairs. «This baseless exaggeration is not supported by any facts,» she has stressed.

«Its real aims are to divert citizens’ attention from the extremely difficult internal political and economic situation in the country, which the current authorities in Chisinau cannot cope with,» Zakharova asserted.

Finally, the Russian diplomatic spokeswoman concluded that Moldova is gradually destroying the traditionally friendly ties between two close countries, thus bowing to the interests of Western countries.

The Moldovan Foreign Ministry on Monday declared an employee of the Russian Embassy in Chisinau ‘persona non grata’ for violating the provisions of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations.
