Biden warns Republicans could lead U.S. «into chaos» after election

U.S. President Joe Biden warned Wednesday that Republican Party candidates who refuse to accept the results of the midterm elections could set the country on a «path to chaos.»

Speaking at a Democratic National Committee event at Union Station, near the Capitol, the U.S. president said the country faces a crossroads in next week’s elections that could disrupt democracy, according to ‘The Washington Post’.

Biden’s assessment comes shortly after the FBI and other agencies predicted that threats of violence by extremists are likely to increase after the November 8 elections.

Thus, at an event held just steps away from the U.S. Capitol — where Trump supporters staged an assault to prevent the certification of the 2020 election results — Biden warned of a continuing attack on American democracy after it became known that Republican candidates could follow in the tycoon’s footsteps and refuse to concede if they lose.

«It’s unprecedented. It’s illegal and it’s un-American (…) As I said before, you can’t love your country only when you win,» the U.S. president told a Democratic crowd, the newspaper reported.

For Biden, this threat to democracy originated when former President Trump refused to accept the results of the 2020 elections.

«He refuses to accept the will of the people, he refuses to accept the fact that he lost. He has abused his power and put loyalty to himself before loyalty to the Constitution. And he has made a big lie an article of faith of the Republican Party,» he has reiterated.

For this reason, he called for not resolving differences among Americans with «a riot, or a mob, a bullet or a hammer,» said Biden, referring to the recent attack on Paul Pelosi at his private home by an assailant, according to ‘The Hill’.

«We resolve them peacefully at the ballot box,» urged the president of the United States during his speech, quoting a phrase of the writer Jon Meacham: «The destiny of the soul of America is where it always is: in the people».
