Luana Rafaela Oliveira Barcelos, 12, was unable to recover from gunshot wounds received on Sunday and died Thursday in Belo Horizonte, the second person to die during an attack allegedly perpetrated by a supporter of Jair Bolsonaro, who burst in with a gun at a private party celebrating the victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The girl is the second victim of Ruan Nilton da Luz, after that of Pedro Henrique Dias, who was also in the garage of his house following the election day with some friends on television. Three other people were injured, although their lives are not in danger.
According to the Civil Police investigation, the suspect, in a state of drunkenness and after the election results were known, left his home in «search of drug traffickers», reports the newspaper ‘O Globo’.
Da Luz, who is in preventive custody, admitted that he fired, but in a «random» way. The first projectiles hit Luana’s abdomen and another 47-year-old woman who was hit in the leg. These cases are now being investigated as double homicide and attempted murder for political reasons.
At the time of his arrest, Da Luz, who was wearing a ski mask, tried to hide the weapon in a nearby hedge. However, two other pistols, a knife and ammunition were found on him.
The other victim is Pedro Dias, who at the time of being shot was chanting Lula da Silva’s name, according to eyewitnesses. «We were with the family celebrating, my nephew was singing» and «he just showed up shooting because Lula had won,» Amanda Dias, the young man’s aunt, told the G1 portal.
The girl’s death has had great repercussions in Brazil and several politicians have condemned what happened and denounced that «Luana died because someone did not accept the election results».
This was stated by the state deputy in Rio de Janeiro of the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL), Erika Hilton, who regretted that twelve years had been interrupted «by a Bolsonarista who invaded Luana’s family’s party on election day».
