Thousands of supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Jan will take to the streets of the country on Saturday to protest against the assassination attempt on the former leader during his long protest march to Islamabad.

The secretary general of the Pakistan Tehrik e Insaf (Pakistan Justice Movement or PTI), Asad Umar, has summoned from 17.00 (13.00 in mainland Spain) to the affiliates of the party of the former prime minister as well as his supporters in areas of concentration most of which is yet to be announced.

«There will be protests in all the cities of the country», Umar assured in comments picked up by Geo TV before pointing out that «the local teams of the party will announce the places of the marches» in due time.

For the moment, only the location of some of the first rallies, such as the one to be held in Liberty Chawk (Lahore) and which will be attended by the secretary general, has been announced.

The former prime minister was shot at least four times by two assailants on Thursday, wounding him in both legs during a rally in the northern city of Wazirabad.

Jan has claimed that he has been the victim of a conspiracy by the government and Army Intelligence services, with whom he has been at odds since the no-confidence motion that ousted him from power in April this year.

Both the Government and the Army have denied any involvement in the attack and have blamed it on an «extremist assault».
