German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday expressed his displeasure with attacks on artworks in museums in Europe by climate activists to denounce global warming and the lack of adequate response policies.

«I recognize that I don’t like it when works of art are smeared with mash,» Scholz said during an event of his Social Democratic Party (SPD) held in Berlin.

In recent weeks artworks in museums in Berlin, London, Rome, Amsterdam or Madrid have been attacked with tomato soup, mashed potatoes, mashed peas or fake blood.

For Scholz, the demonstrators should rethink the purpose of these actions and warned that they could be achieving just the opposite with initiatives such as sticking to the road to impede traffic as does the German group Last Generation, Letzte Generation.

«I think people who find themselves in a traffic jam don’t suddenly understand the seriousness of the problem, they just get angry and I don’t think that’s a good idea,» he argued.
