Israel’s President Isaac Herzog and Jordan’s King Abdullah II met Monday on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP7) in Egypt to discuss bilateral and regional issues, amid heightened tensions in recent months between Israelis and Palestinians.

«Delighted to meet with my friend King Abdullah II of Jordan at COPA27. We discussed trilateral cooperation between Israel, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Jordan in energy and water, as well as the South Jordan River rehabilitation project, advancing bilateral relations and regional issues,» Herzog said on his Twitter social network account.

Jordanian authorities have so far not commented on the content of the meeting, following Amman’s recent criticism of «Israeli aggression» against Palestinians in the face of the latest security operations in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Jordan, Israel and the UAE signed an agreement last year for the construction of a solar power plant in Jordan, as part of their closer relations. Amman signed a peace agreement with Israel in 1994, while the UAE normalized relations with Tel Aviv in late 2020 under the ‘Abraham Accords’, joined by Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan.
