A U.S. citizen was killed late Monday night after being shot in an attack on his vehicle in the center of Iraq’s capital Baghdad, Iraqi authorities have confirmed, with no further details of the incident emerging at this time.

Security sources quoted by the Iraqi television channel Al Sumaria have indicated that the incident took place in Al Sina Street, in the center of the city, and added that the man was seriously wounded and died shortly after in a hospital.

Following the incident, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohamed Shia al Sudani, ordered the opening of an investigation to clarify what happened, according to the Ministry of the Interior, which confirmed that «a committee was formed immediately after the accident to determine the causes and capture those responsible as soon as possible».

The U.S. authorities have not yet commented on the incident. According to information provided by the Kurdish television channel Rudaw, the man was Stephen Edward Troell, an English teacher who worked for an organization linked to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

On the other hand, Canada has confirmed the death on Saturday in Baghdad of a member of its Armed Forces due to «circumstances unrelated to operations» and has indicated that «an investigation is underway into the circumstances of the incident». The man has been identified as Captain Eric Cheung.
