The head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, has accused the prosecutor of Morelos, Uriel Carmona Gándara, of covering up for the alleged murderer of Ariadna López Díaz, after contradictory information was published about the causes of her death, and has therefore requested the intervention of the Attorney General’s Office.
Sheinbaum has communicated that she has instructed local authorities to bring to the attention of the Attorney General’s Office «this case of cover-up» by prosecutor Gándara. «We want a woman to never again be blamed, victimized, belittled and a feminicide to be covered up,» she has stressed.
«As I have always said, in our case we will always be on the side of the victims and of justice,» Sheinbaum said in a press conference in which she showed videos of the alleged perpetrator putting Diaz’s lifeless body into a vehicle to take it to Morelos, reports ‘El Universal’.
«We do not want impunity in any case, but particularly in femicides, where even, they tried to frame the victim, in this case it is clear that the Prosecutor’s Office of Morelos wanted to hide the femicide of Ariadna, allegedly because of its links with the probable femicide,» said Sheinbaum.
The reason for the trip to this state, Sheinbaum points out, is due to the «alleged relationship» of the suspect with the prosecutor Gándara, who first assured that the woman died from alcohol intoxication, although a later autopsy carried out in Mexico City revealed that the victim had been beaten.
«If you listen to the attorney general of Morelos, he says that ‘there are no signs of violence, scientifically proven, it is not femicide’. Yes it was feminicide, yes it was, Ariadna’s case is a feminicide, there is evidence,» Sheinbaum has insisted in reference to the press conference given by Gándara.
For his part, the prosecutor of Morelos has insisted in his defense of the autopsy that would reveal that the young woman died from massive alcohol intake and wanted to deny «categorically» Sheinbaum’s accusations.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office of Morelos has reported that an investigation has been opened for possible irregularities during the process.
Diaz, 27, who lived in Mexico City, disappeared last October 30 after meeting with a group of friends in the Condesa neighborhood of the capital. Two days later, cyclists found his body on a road in the neighboring state of Morelos.
Her disappearance and subsequent death has once again highlighted the violence against women and girls throughout the country. Cases of femicides have been on the rise in recent years, with 2021 being the worst on record with 1,004 murders recorded.
