U.S. President Joe Biden has approved extending the national emergency on the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, at a time of tension over Russia’s threats of nuclear war in the context of the invasion of Ukraine.
Biden has sent a letter to the Speakers of the House of Representatives and Senate, Nancy Pelosi and Kamala Harris, respectively, to communicate the decision, which falls under Section 202d of the National Emergencies Act.
In his letter, published by the White House, the President emphasized that this law «provides for the automatic termination of a national emergency unless, within 90 days prior to the deadline for the declaration, the President publishes in the Federal Register and transmits to Congress a notice that the emergency will be extended».
«In line with this clause, I have sent to the Federal Register for publication the notice affirming that the national emergency with respect to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction declared in Executive Order 12,938 of November 14, 1994, will remain in effect beyond November 14, 2022,» he reiterated.
