The race between Georgia Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock and his Republican challenger, Herschel Walker, will face off on December 6 in a runoff election held Tuesday, according to projections by NBC News and CNN.
Warnock appears to be slightly ahead of Walker, although neither could already achieve the 50 percent needed to avoid a runoff, according to data from these two television networks.
The campaign for the race for the Georgia state Senate seat has been marred by controversy over allegations that the Republican candidate, the anti-abortion Walker, pressured a woman to terminate her pregnancy, prompting the opposition to accuse the lawmaker of being a «hypocrite».
Georgia solidified itself as one of the most competitive states in the 2020 presidential election. Warnock also failed to reach 50 percent in the first round in 2020, so he had to face again in a special election day two months after the ‘midterm’.
He now stands as one of the unknowns that will not be revealed after the midterm vote in a seat whose tilt could mean that one party or the other ultimately controls the U.S. Senate.
