Democrat James Roesener has become the first trans man to become a congressman in U.S. history after winning the race to represent New Hampshire’s 22nd state district in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Roesener, 26, will be the first trans person to represent Americans in the U.S. House of Representatives, joining only eight other trans state legislators in U.S. politics, The Washington Post reported.
Annise Parker, president and CEO of the LGBTQ political advocacy group Victory Fund, called Roesener’s victory «a resounding victory for New Hampshire and for trans people across the country,» the foundation said in a statement.
«At a time of intensifying transphobia at all levels of government and society, she has shown incredible courage throughout her historic campaign,» Parker added.
