
The United States has confirmed the death of a U.S. citizen in an attack by unidentified gunmen on his vehicle in the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Tuesday after Iraqi authorities ordered an investigation into the incident.
«It is with great sadness that I thank the Iraqi people for their messages of support following the brutal murder of Steven Troell in Baghdad,» U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Alina Romanowski said in a brief message on her Twitter account.
Thus, she has stressed that Troell was in the country «in a private capacity and doing what he loved, working with the Iraqi people.» «My deepest condolences to his wife and young children,» Romanowski said. Troell was an English teacher who worked for an organization linked to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohamed Shia al Sudani, has ordered the opening of an investigation to clarify what happened, according to the Ministry of the Interior, which confirmed that «a committee was formed immediately after the accident to determine the causes and capture those responsible as soon as possible».
