Iranian Foreign Minister Hosein Amirabdolahian has directly questioned his German counterpart, Annalena Baerbock, on Twitter on Thursday to reproach her for the «interventionist» and «undiplomatic» stance that Berlin has adopted in relation to the major protests that have been taking place in recent weeks in the Persian nation.

Amirabdolahian has assessed that Germany’s «provocative, interventionist and undiplomatic stance» not only «does not indicate sophistication or wisdom,» but also «undermines old ties» that in the long run will have «consequences.»

«Germany has a choice between commitment to addressing common challenges or confrontation. Our response will be proportionate and firm,» the Iranian foreign minister has warned in response to Baerbock’s support issued to those demonstrating for weeks in Iran.

«The human rights situation in Iran is deteriorating day by day,» said Baerbock, who did not rule out further cooling relations with the Islamic republic if they continued to «mistreat» its citizens. These statements caused the German ambassador in Tehran, Hans-Udo Muzel, to be summoned.

Baerbock also announced a new package of sanctions by the European Union, which according to sources consulted by Europa Press will affect some thirty Iranian individuals and legal entities in retaliation for Tehran’s repression of the protests over the death in custody of the young Kurdish-Iranian Mahsa Amini.
