Former U.S. President Barack Obama stressed that the people who voted in the mid-term elections did so for a «fairer, more equal and freer» country, before stressing that the results «make progress» towards these goals.

«In this election, millions of people have cast their vote for a fairer, more equal and freer America. We’re not there yet, but this is moving us forward,» he said on his Twitter account. «Our democracy is resilient if we remain active and engaged in the periods between elections,» he argued.

In the elections, the Republican Party holds the majority in the House of Representatives, while control of the Senate could be up in the air until December 6, when a runoff election is held in Georgia. Despite the Republican gains, the results are far from the expected «Republican wave» predicted by the polls.
