Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday signed a decree allowing people with foreign citizenship to serve in the country’s Armed Forces.

In this way, Russia amends its regulations on military service, which until now limited participation in the Armed Forces to Russian citizens only.

Now, military service may be performed not only by Russians, but also by foreign citizens who have a residence permit in the country, Interfax reports.

«Military service is performed by those (…) who are citizens of Russia, including those who have citizenship of a foreign state with a residence permit and another document confirming the right to permanent residence,» reads the new legislation.

Another aspect changed by Putin’s decree is the procedure for performing military service in peacetime by foreign citizens, the procedure for concluding a military service contract and its own termination.

Also, the new legislation limits the participation in the Armed Forces of those citizens who have been found in possession of drugs, reports the Russian agency TASS.
