Authorities in Sistan and Baluchistan, two regions in southeastern Iran, have released several dozen participants in protests that began after the death of young Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for improperly wearing the veil.

«Thirty-eight people detained during the recent unrest in Sistan and Baluchestan province, especially in the city of Zahedan, were released minutes ago,» Tasnim news agency reported.

According to a press conference by the authorities in the southeast of the country, they will proceed to release more people who have been in custody since they were arrested during the demonstrations.

Amini’s death has led to protests across the country which have been violently repelled by the Iranian authorities.

The NGO HRANA estimates that more than 15,000 people have been taken into police custody, either temporarily or so far, since the outbreak of the protests, which have claimed the lives of more than 330 people, including around 50 security personnel.

More than 2,000 people had already been charged, almost half of them in the capital, Tehran, since the demonstrations began, according to figures from the Iranian judiciary.
