At least five people have been killed, including a minor, and 15 others injured in a shooting at a market in the town of Izeh, located in the southwestern Iranian province of Khuzestan.

According to information from the Iranian ISNA news agency, the attackers are said to have arrived at the scene on motorcycles, from which they opened fire with assault weapons on the crowd gathered at the site, where anti-government demonstrations had also been called.

The aforementioned agency has advanced the identity of some of the deceased, whose ages range from nine to 45 years old. Likewise, eight of the wounded are in critical condition and have been transferred to hospitals in the area.

The victims include both civilians and police officers. For the moment there is no official statement on the incident, the causes of which are unknown.

The already fragile social stability in Iran has been further destabilized in recent weeks after the death in police custody of the young Mahsa Amini, arrested for not wearing the veil correctly. This episode has led to demonstrations that have been harshly responded to by the authorities.

In this context, a large part of the international community has expressed its disagreement with the repression of the Iranian authorities and has applied sanctions to both personalities and entities of the Asian country.
