RCMP have laid terrorism charges Thursday against a man in the province of Quebec for allegedly plotting a coup in Haiti.

Gerald Nicolas, 51, has been accused of hatching a plan to overthrow the Haitian government headed by Jovenel Moise — assassinated in July 2021 while in the presidential residence — with an armed revolution, all in order to eventually seize power, police detailed in a statement.

Specifically, Nicolas is accused of committing the crime of leaving Canada to facilitate a terrorist activity and supplying goods for terrorist purposes.

In this regard, the accused allegedly carried out specific actions, including traveling to Haiti to coordinate a group of people whose intention was to stage a coup d’état against the established authority.

The investigation, which is unrelated to the assassination of Jovenel Moise, has led the RCMP to lay charges following a joint investigation by the National Security Services and police in the Canadian town of Ville de Lévis, where the accused lived.
