A total of ten prisoners have died in a clash between rival gangs that occurred on Friday afternoon at the El Inca prison in Quito, Ecuador, according to the latest balance published by the National Service of Integral Attention to Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders of Ecuador (SNAI).

The SNAI has explained that tactical groups of the Police and Armed Forces have entered the prison to reestablish control of the situation, reports the newspaper ‘El Universo’.

These clashes occurred hours after the transfer of Jonathan Bermudez, leader of the Los Lobos gang, to the ‘La Roca’ prison in Guayaquil. «Members of this organization» apparently «retaliated violently», according to SNAI.

Bermúdez was allegedly responsible for the massacre at El Inca prison on November 7, in which five inmates were killed.

The Ecuadorian Public Prosecutor’s Office has already opened an ex officio investigation into these violent deaths at El Inca prison and has reported the removal of the bodies.
