The Russian energy company Rosatom has accused the Ukrainian side of seeing «acceptable» a possible «small nuclear accident» at the Zaporiyia power plant, the scene of clashes since the outbreak of the war and again the target of attacks this weekend.

«We informed the international community that the plant is at risk of a nuclear accident, and it is obvious that Kiev considers a small nuclear incident acceptable,» warned Rosatom head Alexei Likhachev.

Lijachev considers that, if so, this would be a precedent that «will forever change the course of history», and has called for «everything possible» to prevent anyone from violating the safety of the nuclear power plant, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported on Sunday «powerful explosions in the area of the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant» on Saturday afternoon and again on Sunday. Russia, for its part, warned of up to 14 Ukrainian heavy artillery impacts on Sunday alone.

These attacks «bring an abrupt end to a period of relative calm at these facilities and once again highlight the need to implement measures to prevent a nuclear accident,» said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
