The President of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez, has shown his solidarity with the Spanish Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, after the brawl generated in the plenary session of the Congress of Deputies by a comment of the political party Vox.
«Political and macho violence against women is intolerable, and we must strongly repudiate it every time it happens. All our solidarity with Minister Irene Montero, victim today of cruel attacks,» said the Argentine president in a message on the social network Twitter.
The message comes after a row broke out in the Spanish Parliament when Vox deputy Carla Tocado said in plenary that «the only merit» of Irene Montero is «having «studied in depth» Pablo Iglesias, her partner and founder of the Podemos party.
After these words, on the bench of other groups such as PSOE, ERC or Ciudadanos there were expressions of mute astonishment while Toscano’s colleagues stood up applauding with laughter.
Hours later, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, numerous ministers and the secretary general of the Popular Party, Cuca Gamarra, condemned the intervention of the Vox deputy and supported the minister.
The Spanish Minister of Equality held a meeting in mid-November with the Argentinean president and her counterpart, the Minister of Women, Gender and Diversity, Ayelén Mazzina. There, Montero participated in two panels on the care society and an official side event on «lessons learned and challenges to protect access to safe abortion».
