The Government of Nicaragua has carried out the closure of another 100 non-profit organizations, thus bringing to more than 3,000 the associations dissolved after the social protests of April 2018 against the Executive of Daniel Ortega.

The Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) has outlawed 91 national NGOs, and nine others of foreign origin, including three from the United States, three from Spain, one Mexican, one Italian and one Dutch, the online newspaper Nicaragua Investiga has reported.

These organizations, including the Association of Independent Retirees and Pensioners of Nicaragua (AJUPIN), have allegedly failed to comply with their obligations to report on their accounts and fiscal periods, with a breakdown of income and withdrawals.

According to the newspaper, several of the delegitimized organizations are Christian and Catholic, as well as development foundations in rural communities or animal rights organizations.

Both the opposition and the international community, including the UN, have questioned this campaign against NGOs, which is part of a wave of repression that began after the 2018 protests and was reinforced in the months leading up to the 2021 elections.
