The European Parliament has denounced the deterioration of women’s rights in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime, following their return to power in August 2021, asserting that respect for their rights must be a condition for the international community to maintain contacts with the Taliban.
In a resolution adopted with 532 votes in favor, the European Parliament criticized the regression of women’s rights in the country and the attacks on educational institutions attended by girls.
In this regard, MEPs demanded that the Taliban guarantee women’s participation in public life and that the international community make this a condition for dealing with Kabul and recalled the Taliban’s promises when they came to power that women’s access to education would be restored.
The resolution regrets that access to information has become increasingly difficult in Afghanistan, journalistic independence has been curtailed and civil society organizations are under increasing pressure.
