The European Parliament on Thursday gave its support to the €18 billion package proposed by the European Commission to support Ukraine in 2023 in the face of financial needs due to the Russian invasion.

Brussels is asking for a macro-financial assistance of 18 billion euros to Ukraine next year, a support that will take the form of loans on favorable terms and that will be conditional on far-reaching reforms on the part of Kiev, although the initiative needs the unanimity of the 27 to go ahead.

The funds will be used to support essential public services, such as the functioning of hospitals, schools and the provision of housing for relocated people, macroeconomic stability and the restoration of critical infrastructure destroyed by Russia.

The idea is to bring sustainable support to Kiev, with payments in quarterly installments, with continuity and predictability essential to keep Ukraine afloat in the midst of war.

«Ukraine is fighting for European values. The European Parliament and the European Union have shown remarkable solidarity with Ukraine on the humanitarian, military and financial front,» said EP President Roberta Metsola after the vote.

The package must now be approved unanimously by the EU-27 before Brussels can access the markets and disburse the support early next year.
