United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Saturday strongly condemned the attack on an airfield in southeastern Central African Republic (CAR), near the border with South Sudan, in which a Moroccan peacekeeper was killed.

Guterres recalled that such attacks can constitute war crimes under international law and urged the CAR to «spare no effort to identify the perpetrators of this tragedy so that they can be brought to justice swiftly».

The UN Security Council had issued a statement on Friday also condemning the attack «in the strongest terms», stressing that anyone involved in planning, directing or sponsoring the attacks could be sanctioned.

In addition, Council members expressed their full support for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) and thanked the nations contributing troops and peace to this mission.

For his part, the head of MINUSCA assured that the mission had been adopting a «robust, preventive and proactive posture» to respond to security alerts from civilian communities in the face of continuing threats from armed groups.
