Hawaii’s Mauna Loa volcano, considered the world’s largest active volcano, has erupted, a first in nearly four decades and so far not threatening nearby populated areas.
The Hawaii Volcano Observatory has reported that the eruption began late Sunday at around 11:30 p.m. (local time). «At this time, lava flows are contained to the summit area and are not threatening communities below the slope,» the advisory reads.
The institute has urged residents of this volcanic area to prepare for possible evacuations, as the evolution of the lava flows can change «rapidly» and, if they are not contained in the caldera, move down the slope.
Experts also do not rule out that the winds may carry gases and even ash debris to other areas farther away. Authorities have issued a red warning for air navigation in the area.
