Members of the UK House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday for a four-day visit during which they plan to meet with Taiwanese authorities to discuss mainly issues related to the situation in the Indo-Pacific region.
The delegation of British MPs, led by Alicia Kearns, will meet with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing Wen, as well as other senior Taiwanese officials, the parliamentary committee said in a statement.
«This visit to Taiwan has long been a priority for the Foreign Affairs Committee. The UK enjoys strong cultural and commercial relations with Taiwan, which has served to share ambitions in areas such as energy, education and technology,» said Kearns.
He highlighted the importance of the «multiple security challenges» facing both the UK and Taiwan and emphasized the «constructive ties between democracies».
«The Indo-Pacific and strengthening relations in the region are important to the UK. In the region, Taiwan’s voice is unique and invaluable. During the course of our visit we will meet with individuals, senior officials, politicians, business people and representatives of civil society,» he explained.
For its part, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry has welcomed the delegation in a Twitter message in which it wished them «a successful visit» after the controversy sparked in August by the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, who visited the island with a U.S. delegation.
