Journalist Wilder Alfredo Cordoba, director of the local television network Union TV and known for his social activities, was found dead on Tuesday in the municipality of La Union, located in the department of Nariño, in eastern Colombia.

According to official information gathered by the radio station RCN Radio, Cordoba, 44 years old, «was killed by unknown subjects on a motorcycle (…) after doing journalistic work for his channel».

These same sources said that the person who was riding with him on the motorcycle shot the journalist in the back on up to three occasions. The authorities ruled out that the attack could be related to a robbery since Córdoba was found with all his belongings.

The Secretary of Government of Nariño, Andrés Zúñiga, has expressed his rejection of the incident and has called on the relevant authorities to speed up the investigations to clarify the journalist’s death as soon as possible.

«We regret this act of violence that mourns the department. We ask the competent agencies to speed up the investigative process to find the whereabouts of those responsible,» said Zúñiga.

Also, the departmental representative has advanced that the local government held late Monday a Security Council to «analyze security actions».

According to the Colombian press, Cordoba was known in the area for his critical stance towards local authorities and was independently carrying out social work.
