Civil Protection Personnel during the Floods in Southern Italy – PROTECCIÓN CIVIL ITALIA

Just a week after the death of at least eleven people on the island of Ischia, southern Italy was once again hit by a severe storm that caused storms and flooding over the weekend.

Emergency services have used inflatable boats in regions such as Crotona in Calabria to wade through totally flooded areas and facilitate evacuations.

The storms have caused severe material damage, although there are no reports of personal injury at this time. Civil Defense has reported landslides and mudslides in Sicily, where several roads are cut off.

Floods and cyclones have been the protagonists in Calabria and Puglia and in the Lipari islands, between Sicily and Calabria, an earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale has been detected, which would not have caused significant damage.

In Ischia itself, several hundred residents spent the nights of Friday and Saturday in hotels or with relatives because of the risk to their homes.

In the north of Italy, in Venice, the emergency locks are still open to prevent flooding and the Electromechanical Experimental Module (MOSE), a system with 78 mobile locks, is operating at full capacity.
